Synopsis

Breaking the Code is a biopic of Alan Turing, one of the greatest mathematical minds of the 20th century. He was also a key figure in the decryption of the German "Enigma" code during World War II, and one of the key proponents of digital computing. However, his homosexuality got the best of him in a time when homosexuality was "illegal", and a later course of events concerning this turned his life around for the worst, eventually resulting in a tragic end of the great genius.

Main characters

Derek Jacobi (Alan Turing): English mathematician in the earlier half of the 20th century, whose achievements in cryptography contributed to the defeat of the Germans in WWII.
Amanda Root (Pat Green): Cryptographer at Blechley Park, works with Turing and eventually falls in love with him, regardless of his homosexuality.
Prunella Scales (Sara Turing): Alan's mother, a constant figure in his life, as his father abandoned the family during his childhood.
Julian Kerridge (Ron Miller): Turing's young, deceitful lover, who was eventually responsible for Turing's criminal conviction.

Analysis

This biopic was a look into the life and times of one of the most brilliant, yet misunderstood and unfortunately disgraced scientists in history. While the technical information that you learned concerning the concept of the "Turing Machine," the Enigma and how Turing overcame this obstacle was interesting, seeing how his homosexuality later affected his career was particularly interesting, because it showed us how the practice of science, although we like to think it is an objective one, is nonetheless administrated by humans, who are subjective by nature, thus allowing for things like politics and "scandal" to affect it.
